About David Barton...
"Among other things, I am a Husband, Father, Christian and Kiwi by choice. "
I’m a Husband, Father, Christian and Kiwi by choice. I am also a cancer survivor – an event that really changed my life – some good, some not so good.
I have lived an active life, gained many experiences and travelled widely – especially in my younger days.
I have worked in 2 main industries – the technology sector and the mental health field. In the past 10 years, I have trained and worked in counselling and psychology.
My highest educational qualification is a PhD in Psychology from the University of Otago – Dunedin where I live. I did my thesis in Social Cognition and focused on the relationship between peoples faces and names. I really enjoyed my time at university and picked up some useful experience running lab classes for undergrads.
Following graduation, I wrote my first paperback book called “Achieving Your Best Self.” It was my take on what I believed people need to reach more of their potential. I followed that with the ‘Goal Achievers Journal’, a practical tool for goal setting and goal pursuit. Both are available on Amazon.
What I have noticed in life, is that if you don’t set and pursue your own goals you will end up pursuing someone elses.
I have also written other short books, the most recent being “Stage 4 Survivor: Stepping into Darkness” which describes my harrowing account coming close to dying an agonising horrible death. That is why I say cancer changed me. The horror of it has made me more appreciative of the life I have been blessed to live even if it is a life marred by the damages and ravages of a cruel disease. My battle with cancer started in early 2018 and by the end of 2019, I was on a path to recovery. Yet much of the damage to my body was permanent which settled a dark cloud over my life until the middle of 2020. I had to adapt to my new normal.
David Barton Coaching is my step forward into the future
In 2021 I created my next course which was on Building Better Self Esteem. I followed this with my latest course on Goal Achievement for Success. This course took me back to 2016/2017 when I started writing and producing material around the subject.
My website David Barton Coaching brings several elements together. Here I integrate my skills in psychology, counselling, teaching and coaching to create a service to others.
I hope to help people build balance into their lives by creating goals around their most important life categories.
My coaching service helps individuals set goals for the most important areas of their lives. I am referring to areas such as:
- Spirituality and faith
- Health and fitness
- Business and career
- Fun, hobbies, travel
- Financial, ownership
Following this, I help people sort through all their goals to find the most important ones. Next, we formulate achievable goals for the 2 or 3 top goals. Then we create the plan, or ‘how to’ for each goal. This is what we do to achieve goals successfully.
Once we have worked through formulating and planning our goals, we synthesise all our work into a single goal statement which we can execute with confidence. Finally, we take action on the goal and monitor it using feedback to tweak our parameters to ensure we make progress and don’t stall or throw in the towel.
That’s my process in a nutshell and my course will take you through each stage, explaining it in more detail
